Asus Eee Pad Memo 7 Inch Tablet

Slated to be released in June of 2011, the new Asus Eee Pad MeMo is an in-between gadget that will be run using the Android 3.0 Honeycomb Operating System specifically made for tablet computers.

The Asus Eee Pad MeMo has a 7 inch display with 1024 x 600 pixels of resolution. It also has a dual camera system which includes a rear facing 5 MP and a 1.2 MP front facing camera for video calls. There is also a dual core 1.2 GHz Qualcomm 8260 Snapdragon processor and an extremely long lasting 5600 mAh battery, which enables up to 10 hours of video viewing.

The Memo has also been equipped with a HDMI output for connectivity freedom, and will be able to stream 1080P video. The supported standard Bluetooth headset, dubbed the "MeMic" media phone extender, brings call technology within the Eee Pad to the forefront. It is the only tablet that will be able to place non-video, straight-forward calls.

Because the device only weighs 14 ounces, walking around with it is quite feasible. It was specifically designed for single-handed use, with one edge being thicker. One of the main attraction points is the capacitive stylus, which will allow for some interesting apps to be run, such as Media Note and Painter. The idea of the stylus is to help with handwriting while the tablet is in use and employs pressure-sensitive drawing capabilities. When the Asus Eee Pad MeMo is released, it is expected to sell for $499 and up.

The iPad Reviewed

The iPad is a brilliant concept: a computer driven solely by your touch. Since the announcement of the iPad on January 27, 2010, no device has generated so much hype. iPad rumors ranged from running Mac OS X to having a built in camera. This article will provide facts and dispel rumors. And with all the Internet Hype going on you sure will need to have the rumors dispelled and the facts outlined.

The iPad has a 9.7 inch multitouch LED (backlit) display, a pixel resolution of 1024x768, an A4 processor, 16-64 GB of flash storage, 802.11n Wi-Fi support and Bluetooth 2.1. The iPad comes in 2 flavors: a WIFI only version and a WIFI+3G version. The iPad weighs roughly 1.6 Lbs. Like its predecessors it has an accelerometer and runs on iPhone OS (albeit a slightly modified version). The iPad claims 10 hour battery life although the settings used to achieve that are not known. There are several criticisms with these features. Why was iPhone OS was used instead of MAC OS? Mac OS is not optimized for the multitouch display like the iPhone OS. Another criticism concerns the A4 processor. The A4 processor contains the same graphics chip as the iPhone 3GS, yet its only 400 mhz higher. Will the A4 processor support the higher resolution without bugs or crashes? The iPad is running on a 4:3 aspect ratio. This aspect ratio is great for reading books and browsing the web, yet it will be problematic for watching movies -- the letter boxing would be too big

The Criticisms. The Three big criticisms concerning the iPad are: its lack of flash, its lack of multitasking and its lack of a camera. The lack of flash is officially explained by interfering with the battery life of the device. Unofficially, there are several possible explanations. The first one guesses that Apple wants to retain a strong control of its AppStore. Enabling flash will allow users to get applications that are normally sold on the AppStore for free and thus undermining Apple's profits (no longer the $99 developer fee). The second guess states that Apple wants to be the herald of the new HTML 5 technology. Seeing the popularity of the iPad, developers will want to jump on the HTML5 bandwagon to maximize profit. Although flash is predominant in the web today, HTML5 will slowly eat away at Adobe's monopoly and nevertheless, there is nothing a good jailbreak can't fix. The lack of Multitasking is also an issue. Multitasking is actually already present in the iPhone OS 3.0, but it is only restricted to Apple's Apps. This is done for security reasons and battery reasons. An Apple Insider has announced that Apple has already announced the solution to the multitasking problem, perhaps the new "long tap" gesture will bring out a "task manger"--like interface. Once again, nothing a jailbreak can't fix (backgrounder+Proswitcher for the iPhone). Another concern for potential consumers is the lack of camera. One should expect things like this from Apple - a camera is something they would be adding to the Generation 2 iPad to promote sales. A camera shouldn't be the selling point, however for the consumers who absolutely need a camera -- a 30pin attachment camera is rumored for the iPad

The Good. The iPad was never meant to be a netbook substitute. A netbook is a small buggy device. The iPad provides a closed, fluid and stream lined experience. There are tablets that are technologically superior to the iPad (HPSlate and Notion Ink's Adam). However these devices are not optimized for the Mobile Platform. The HPSlate is running on Windows 7, an awkward choice for a touch oriented device. Notion Ink's Adam is running on Android 2.0, however it is run on a Pixel Qi screen (colored e-ink) -- not a good substitute for LCD. The iPad is a closed system, so no annoying bugs and viruses (imagine a virus on a Tablet). The iPad comes with access to an already populated AppStore. Whatever your interests are 140,000+ apps will surely suit your every need. The iPad sacrifices some of its Technical Features to provide an experience that someone as young as a child or not tech oriented as a senior can enjoy.

As of March 12th, the iPad could be preordered. Should you pre-order an iPad? I would advise against it. Wait a few days after the iPad's Official release (April 3rd for USA and slightly later for other countries) and watch a few videos to get the general feel of the device. Wait for all the hype to settle and decide whether it is your type of a device. Which version should you buy? I would recommend the 3G - there is nothing like having the Internet at your fingers, however if you plan to use the iPad at home, the Wifi version should do just fine. The iPad is a revolutionary new device. Don't be left behind

A Fast Look At LG Tablet PCs

The first thing you might notice when looking at the new LG tablet PCs is the easy to handle size. It's 8.9 inch screen keeps it comfortable in the hand without being cramped in the hand. This doesn't mean a lack of resolution however. It still displays in HD definition and will even handle 3D.

Not only does it display in 3D, but it records video in 3D as well with its back facing, 5 megapixel, stereoscopic cameras. That means good enough quality to record to your tablet and then use the miniHD output to throw it up on your living room television set. That should be a good improvement over your old camcorder or phone camera. You will need glasses to take advantage of the 3D though. Don't worry, a flash is included for stills as well.

There's also a front facing 2 megapixel webcam for videoconferencing or updating your vlog. In an impressively detail oriented design choice the camera has been placed in the corner so that it's usable in both portrait and landscape positions.

The speakers are also arranged in a set of three so that you get the full stereo experience no matter how the device is turned. That kind of design awareness is a sure sign of a quality product. When the manufacturer anticipates the needs of the customer a good experience is sure to result.

Those of you with Android phones will no doubt recognize the Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system. This means that all your favorite apps will run just fine, and the device has perfect integration with all your other Google technology. These days that probably means just about everything. Many apps haven't been turned up to tablet size yet, but that's an ongoing process that means more and more tablet optimized options as time passes. There's even a healthy selection of apps pre-loaded at purchase.

The screen is clearer than it's ten inch rivals, and the processing power is second to none with a speedy dual-core processor that makes multitasking quick and responsive. The interface, as well as the hardware, is designed for easy management of multiple apps and tasks. Pausing a movie or game to check email should be quick and easy.

This extra clarity, impressive speaker placement and powerful processor add up to a wonderful media viewing experience whether your streaming HD over the web or playing a digital copy from your hard drive. There's plenty of internal memory for the average media user, and for the real media fiends there's plenty of connectivity options to plug you into your full database at home.

No matter where you are the internet should never be far away with wi-fi and 4G options available to keep browsing not only available but fast. You will even get a hefty discount when you sign up for the native data plan.

The new LG tablet brings performance to a handy size and some bells and whistles to boot. You'll find it reliable, convenient and simple to use, especially if you're already a member of the Android army.

Flash Player Support For Your iPhone or iPad

Adobe's Flash player is one of the most widely used tools intended for delivering audio, video, as well as animation on the web. But their currently is no support for Flash player on the iPhone or iPad for the time being, nevertheless this is due to change, much to the delight of the large Apple fan base.

The market for making dynamic content for desktop web viewers has been dominated by Adobe Flash. Numerous internet sites use Flash player through displaying their own online catalog, web demonstrations, data and a lot more. Some live sport score websites in addition employ Flash to update their scoreboard on live games, as well as to stream matches on the internet. With the mobile Apple devices missing the support for Flash player on safari, owners can be missing out on some top quality content that various other smart phone along with tablet owners have got access to.

So, why have Apple as of yet still not necessarily backed the idea of having Flash on their own mobile devices? Some will hypothesize that its caused by rivalry amongst Apple and Adobe, others are implying that developers will lose revenue share as a result of content as well as games being developed by new people experienced with Flash player, however the official Apple stance is simple - The use of Flash or maybe a Flash player on the devices would cause substantial battery depletion and use many resources. They wished to invent a computer device that will function straight out the box, and be easily utilized by a diverse market, and as a consequence, Flash just didn't match their technical requirements.

On the other hand, Adobe have claimed on various foccasions that Apple are unwilling to get together, with Adobe actually going as far to state on their own iPhone Flash web site - "To be clear, Adobe wants to make Flash Player 10.1 available for the iPhone and with Apple's support we're ready to do the work". Adobe also have previously mentioned they receive typically three million demands each and every month from iPad and iPhone owners, looking for a player to be produced for their devices.

It's a big move for a company such as Apple not to support Flash for either their iPhone or iPad systems, primarily because there are a great number of internet websites which utilise this technology, and no uncertainty that this is increasing fast on account of improved broadband data transfer rates together with monthly allowances. Initially, launching a website which employed Flash would take time. However now you pretty much never notice the change, and in the majority of situations, you will not actually realise your viewing a Flash-based website or web application.

Apple also has big competition from many other tablet and smartphone manufacturers, who virtually all support Flash player on their systems, whether they run Windows or Android operating systems. They also have to take into account the enormous user base internet sites like Facebook currently have, and just how often their free online games are enjoyed, that happen to be all driven by Flash. As the use of the internet goes up, and mobile devices already have taken this market by storm, you could expect a lot of individuals who buy an iPad or iPhone to generally be let down when they discover they can not have fun with their favourite online games while away from their home computer.

Flash for safari remains a long way off, as no statement has been given on whether Apple will include this into their devices, however hope is not totally lost, as they have recently announced they are going to be releasing a free of charge Flash player designed for iPhone via their app store, which may be used to run Flash-based software. Despite the fact that you'll still have no luck with Flash whilst exploring the net, it is very likely that a completely functional Flash player for web browsing will probably be released too..

Although Apple does not support flash player for the iPhone or iPad, it is possible to obtain a flash player for iPhone, and also methods to get flash player for iPad. Have a look at applerepo.com for the most up-to-date news on flash player being made for apple products

Are You Ready To Take Your Business Truly Mobile?

We live in a very dynamic World were change is all around us, every day. People lead busy and demanding lives and have begun to understand the value of TIME.

Most Businesses have some form of online presence and its getting more and more difficult to grab peoples attention to market your message. Times are rapidly changing in our marketplace and you need to keep ahead of the moving technological landscape of the internet in order to survive.

Mobile marketing is growing in importance to both the business owner and the consumer because it allows content delivery and consumption on the move. Which means that people are growing accustomed to content delivered to today's Smart mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad and the Android driven smart phones. What this allows them to do is effectively pay attention to a video, audio or document at a time more suited to their often crazy schedule, without being tied to a bulky computer or laptop and an internet connection.

Mobile marketing is the future of online marketing. Those smart enough to recognise that will still be in business tomorrow, those that don't probably won't survive as an online business.

People follow technology. Its been like that since the Industrial revolution introduced automation to the Cotton Mills of Northern England. Time is money and something that either saves labour or saves time will grow in popularity.

The Answer to survival is Product delivery.

In today's ever changing fast pace "Must have it on demand" world its no longer acceptable to just deliver across one platform (the computer), you have to be able to deliver across every conceivable platform, and that includes Mobile devices like smart phones and tablet style computers such as Apple's iPad.

If you are selling information products online or you have a membership site with Video, Audio or PDF files media do you really expect your customers to consume all of your content only on their computer?

Consumers love mobile devices and smart phones because they can take the internet with them and if you are not allowing them an easy way to view your content while they are on the move, your are marketing in the dark ages.

The Internet has gone mobile and your customers will demand the ability to consume your content on their iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad. If you don't provide it, you will find your customers will simply buy a product from a vendor that has that capability.

Fortunately there are a few ways to provide streaming video and DF's to smart mobile devices. There are a few "App's" available that allow streaming of media on smart mobile devices. You owe it to your customers and to your business to stay ahead of the pack and take your business Really mobile.

A New Tablet From Notion Ink - The Adam?

Why you should want to do that is another question, but it is likely that lighting conditions will sometimes be better suited to one or other of the alternative displays. It was displayed at CES 2010, although as yet has only been given a temporary name: appropriately Adam. For those of you to whom eReaders are the name of the game, you should also keep in mind that this is an ink tablet and not an eReader per se. However, it has a few exciting features that will pull the strings and press the buttons of anybody that gets excited by innovation in this technology.

Pixels' Qi technology is one of these exciting innovations that you just love to see working for the first time. Enabling ePaper to be viewed without glare in full sun light, and then switching to regular LCD or a low-watt high definition display. It is based on Android, and offers just over 10 inches of display screen at 1024 x 600 pixels.

The purpose of the three display options is that the e-Ink and e-Paper display can be read in sunlight without reflection problems, although you also have the option of a standard LCD display if that is what you prefer - many do in fact, and the E-Ink display is not as popular as many believe it to be. The third option, a low-power trans-reflective screen, saves on battery power, and can be used whenever you want to conserve the battery and lighting conditions enable you to read the screen without eye-strain.

The tablet is claimed to be able to play a 1080 pixel video for eight hours without recharging, and one that you can browse online for 16 hours. According to Notion, it is the only company to use the Qi screens with a tablet, and so reduce battery consumption to about 10% of normal. Not only that, but there are several accessories offered such as a digital compass, GPs, and accelerometer and a 3 Meg camera. It also has speakers and a microphone, and the integrated memory ranges from 16 to 32 gig, with a SD card slot if more is needed. Something similar was created by Fujitsu a year ago: as described in the article "E-paper 2.0 And Fujitsu Has It In Color", FLEPia e-readers incorporate Fujitsu's ground breaking color e-paper, 4GB SD flash memory card, XGA quality display that supports 768X1024 and either 8 or 4096 colors can be chosen.

This is some mean machine, and even though it is 'just' a tablet, it is extremely powerful with a price tag of around $325. Add to that Bluetooth, WiFi and USB, HDMI and headphone connectors, and you know that you are getting your money's worth. It is possible to go further and mention its capability of running three 1080 bit streams along with its beautiful profile (not everybody is worried by the spec - they love the looks!) and you will pay the $325 without one single blink.

CoolER or BeBook? Forget it unless you want a small eReader that can do little else. This tablet is exactly that: a tablet that rocks and offers you three ways to read your eBooks, magazines and newspapers. If specs thrill you, then this is 6.3" x 9.8" x 0.6", a bit thicker than some dedicated eReaders, but then again, it does a lot more. The chip is an nVidia TEGRA and it's not hard to lose sight of the fact that this is not a netbook computer.

It is machines such as the Notion Ink 'Adam' that imposes (only) slight doubts upon the future of dedicated Readers such as the Kindle, the Nook and any of the Sony equivalents. However, as yet, this tablet, that is certain to take a massive chunk out of the netbook market, does not compete directly with the aforementioned dedicated eReaders for a number of reasons, one being that it was designed to be predominantly an eReader. Nevertheless its ePaper technology enables savings to be made in power usage and battery life, and glare is consequently lower although the transreflective display option enables you to have a clear view in direct strong sunlight.

Between Notion Ink, Pixel Qi paper technology and Google's Android application framework, we have here a tablet that can truly be said to be 'new' in that it combines the more important cutting edge technology that is being applied to the most modern and sought after tablet and eBook readers. It will be some time, however, before tablets can compete with eReaders for that one specialist application, and because of the size and convenience of use of such dedicated eBook readers, it might never happen. At least, not using current technology.

Where this machine will benefit is with those that are looking for a small tablet computer that will also enable them to read eBooks and other publications, but for whom the eReader capability is not their sole need.

EPublishing - Threat or Opportunity for Traditional Printers

iPads, iPhones and the glut of various tablet devices currently hitting the market are changing the way many people look at publications. An increasing number of people are finding that using mobile devices to access a wide range of material (often while commuting) is more convenient than magazines, newspapers, and other traditional print media. The brilliant screen resolution has promised to make the iPad the new medium for reading magazines.

For some printers and publishers this previously inexperienced trend is a source of concern; even fear. But is this fear well founded? Was the initial buzz around the iPad and magazines just a fad? Is this a threat or opportunity to the print industry?

After all, there appears to have been a downward trend in iPad magazine subscriptions after the initial frenzy. When Wired launched their iPad magazine in June 2010, they sold more than 100,000 'copies'. But more recently it has been reported Wired's iPad mag only sold an average 31,000 copies per month in Q3/10. Falling further to 22,000 and 23,000 for October and November respectively. Vanity Fair fared no better and has seen declines in iPad sales from 10,500 in August, September, and October to 8,700 copies of its November issue. Glamour dropped around 20%, Men's Health has experienced a 28% drop and GQ has lost buyers. Fewer and fewer people appear to buying digital magazines for the iPad.

So is this a sign for the future? Does it mean printers and publishers need not worry? With the glut of tablets and smartphones expected on the market in the near future and the reducing entry cost, I am sure there is a long-term future for ePublishing. And for printers and publishers with vision, ePublishing should be seen as a way of complimenting their 'ink-on-paper' publishing - it's a chance to get ahead of competitors, to take advantage of lower distribution costs, increase reach and create new revenue streams.

As Charles Darwin said; "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most adaptable to change"

Simple Solutions

There are a variety of options for providing material so it can be viewed on the mobile devices flooding the market. The simplest approach is to make your pdf print material 'look like a magazine or book', and there are numerous cheap software applications that allow you to turn your pdf files into 'page flippers'. In fact most machines, whether they be iPads, iPhones or tablets have excellent support for viewing pdf files natively within their environments.

Here's a brief summary of PDF-related options:

1. Provide a link to a PDF document from an existing website. Most tablet devices have the ability to easily download and view PDF documents, so this is a simple approach, if people are already visiting your website.

2. Make your PDF downloadable from the Apple iTunes store as an "App". There are many options for converting a PDF document to a "page flipper" app, which can be listed on the iTunes store. While this may provide a level of marketing exposure, it is unclear how much benefit this provides as it may get lost among the 200,000 games and other apps in the iTunes Store.

To list applications on the iTunes store, it is necessary to open an account with Apple, which involves sending various paperwork and company details to Apple.

One downside, is that applications for iPad and iPhone devices will not run on non-Apple devices. This is a serious concern if one considers the number of vendors and projected growth for Android-based phones and tablets.

3. An alternative to creating Apps is to publish e-books. Apple provides guidance on how to do this. Their recommendations are that if text is going to be the star of your presentation use the ePub format, but if layout is important then use pdf files. Both of them can be published via the iTunes service as a digital eBook.

To list an eBook with iTunes, you need to open an account with Apple, and you need to get an ISBN number for your publication. This is not necessarily a simple process. The main benefit is that you will be listed as a book, rather than an App, and this may have credibility implications.

Limitations of Page Flippers Unfortunately, most readers are experienced with the internet, and are no longer satisfied with simple pages of text intermingled with pictures. They want sites that allow them to "do stuff". They want to watch videos, to search through content, to access related information, to "browse", to find out prices and to purchase things they like, and to follow their whim. They often aren't satisfied to just flip back and forth through pages.

To meet these expectations, a different approach is required. While there are several possibilities, the most flexible and cost effective approach is to convert your application to a "Web App". In simple terms, a Web App is website that can be distributed or accessed as if it were an application running on the mobile device.

Rather than being a simple "page flipper" for viewing a PDF document, a Web App has the ability to contain extra functionality. Such functionality can be related to improving the user's experience (for example including videos, menus, links an interactive features), or related to generating revenue from the document (targeted advertising, or the ability to make purchases directly from within the publication), or related to providing a useful service to the reader (calculators, access to data, Facebook connections, etc).

However, with the right development tool you can turn your publication into a great looking Web App with a level of quality consistent with your printed publication(including a choice of up to 3,500 fonts) - 're-purposing' your design and print effort to multiple electronic delivery platforms including the web, tablets and smart-phones utilising various operation systems (eg Apple iOS, Google Android, Windows Phone), and also from the Internet.

With a strategy that 'goes beyond page flipping' you can reap significant commercial benefits including increased revenue opportunities, for example: a. Regionalise advertising ie provide advertisements specific to the location the person is accessing the ePublication b. Introduce a "click through" payment system for advertisers. When a reader clicks to a specific advertiser's entry, you are able to charge for this (similar to Google Adwords) c. Place only a short version of your publication online to entice readers to: i. Subscribe to the printed version, or ii. By placing the publication behind a payment gateway, have readers purchase the current online publication or subscribe to future online versions.

Maintain quality 'look and feel' of your publication With the ever-increasing array of electronic tools on which people are accessing the web, it is important that quality publications be presented professionally. What may look great on a computer screen from a website will not translate to an easily viewed presentation on a smartphone or tablet.

Speed Matters And, it's not enough these days just to produce an App or a Web App that conforms to the design and marketing view of the magazine.

Users are becoming more and more demanding. Marissa Mayer, Google VP, has stated that their testing has shown a "half second delay [in page loading] caused a 20% drop off. Half a second delay killed user satisfaction".

Pages need to load quickly to give users that 'instant-on' experience. It is no use having the best looking magazine page which takes 2 minutes to load up - there won't be anyone there to read it. The recent load times of the 'The Daily' iPad app is a good example.

Use new media Today, publishers and printers have the option to go digital or 'ink on paper', but many are choosing a collaborative approach, still delivering traditional print, but complimenting it with high-quality digital editions.

With your on-line version of your publication, look to embed video and audio files on the repurposed website. This makes the media come to life and offers a rich multimedia experience, if the publisher wishes to do so. This gives the publisher the opportunity to grow revenue streams using advertisements embedded in the new media. Most importantly this new media should be delivered using technology that ensures compatibility with the wide variety of platforms such as Apple iOs which are unfriendly to flash, and non-Apple devices.

While the discussion for and for or against the benefits of ePublishing will no doubt go on for some time, there are a few facts that cannot be ignored:

• tablet devices are the hottest selling item in the electronics industry, and demand for compatible media will have similar exponential growth.

• for some types of media, the presentation of an iPad or other tablet device "touches" the reader in a way that a website or printed media never will.

• today, publishing in a tablet format is a sign that your business is forward thinking. In the near future, not publishing in a tablet format will indicate to your customers that you are behind the times.

ePublishing is here to stay. The only question is how it will fit with traditional media and how to maximize the benefits is can deliver.

Welcome To The World Of Tablets!

Over the decades, computers have evolved at a humongous rate. One of the new technologies is the tablet PC. A tablet PC is a tablet sized personal computer, with the characteristics of a full-sized PC. In addition, it might functions like a rotating touch screen with an additional input device. Usually, a tablet runs on Microsoft Windows or Linux platform.

Tablets Made The World Closer

Since the term first came into use with Microsoft's Tablet PC in 2001, the market has been flooded with such items. Few of the well-known brands are: Apple's iPad, Sony, HP and Dell. It's not difficult to spot someone holding a tablet nowadays. You can easily see someone at public places checking their emails, logging on to social media networks, video chatting, listening to streaming musics or playing games with tablets. With the convenience of tablets due to their small size, the world has become closer.

From compatibility and scalability point of view of the apps, Android OS definitely rules. Android is an open OS which any developer or manufacturer can use in his products. In fact, Android tablet PC will be your best choice if you want wide selection of apps for an affordable price. Some of the common Android based tablets are Samsung Galaxy Tab, Asus Eee Pad and Dell Streak. Samsung Galaxy Tab is seen by many as the closest competitor for Apple's iPad.

Which Is The Best?

As the end item though, iPad emerges as the ruler. It is much thinner, has front and rear cameras, video chat selection and a much faster processor. With these advantages comes a set of negatives. The picture quality is average and all the ports like USB, HDMI etc.require adapters.

Microsoft Windows Tablets have been in the market for a very long time. Their new items identified as "convertibles" are excellent blends of smartphones and laptops or notebooks. With the sleek look and light weight, they also provide attributes like flip keyboard, bridging the gap among laptops, notebooks and tablets.

Though the majority of tablets are primarily on Microsoft Windows or Android, some manufacturers adopted Apple's concept of building the tablet PC from scratch. The well-known brands in this class would be Blackberry and HP.

When planning to buy a tablet PC, it ultimately boils down to cost, performance, requirements and efficiency. So do not rush. Do some research, compare prices and specs, choose the best suitable tablet for your needs and go for it!

No doubt Apple Inc is the market leader of tablet PCs. If you are just new to tablet PCs and is looking to buy one, please read this article to help you on buying an iPad (How To).

Silverlight Vs Flash Vs HTML5

When it comes to custom web development, there seems to be a lot of talk between the three different platforms for video and animation. Flash has been the most used platform for streaming videos and animations but HTML5 and Silverlight are attempting to take its place. What separates these three technologies, and will one of them ultimately prevail over the others?

Everybody is familiar with Flash, especially when it comes to custom software development. It's used on major websites such as YouTube, Hulu, and other video sites. The technology is also used on portable electronic devices and more companies are trying to support the format for their users. The fact of the matter is that Flash is deeply rooted into computer users and is used by almost all users.

As you may know, HTML is the programming code we use to create websites. You can go to any website and view source in order to read the HTML code in which it is written. HTML5 was released with new features, specifically the ability to include audio and video within the code. The addition of this feature will result in Flash no longer being necessary for multimedia, greatly impacting the market between these three mediums.

Silverlight is a plug-in designed by Microsoft that allows users to stream video, audio, and interactive content. This plug-in is designed to work with all operating systems and will also support all the major browsers out there. It doesn't matter if you use Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari, or Internet Explorer -- Silverlight is made to work with all of them. Silverlight is an already-popular, growing alternative to Flash. Some notable companies already leveraging Silverlight include Netflix and Major League Baseball. Netflix's instant streaming player and MLB's video highlights and news clips both rely on Silverlight.

With the release of HTML5 and the growing popularity of Silverlight, many people in the tech world and Internet experts are saying that Flash will no longer be necessary. Some are going as far as saying that these two technologies will render Flash obsolete. In order to get an accurate prediction of what will happen, you really have to look at the user base.

When you think about it, Flash already exists in the core of our computer and electronic device usage. Many of us are not even aware that we are using Flash and don't really want to deal with anything new. As for web developers, there is a huge community supporting Flash and the use of it.

This means that it will be really hard to replace Flash altogether. Consider that some of the most trafficked websites on the Internet use Flash, it will also be a big move to replace it. Of course there are some sites like YouTube and Vimeo that are adapting to technologies such as HTML5. That does show that it is being considered and in some cases accepted.

Silverlight application development will improve as it becomes more used and the user base grows. While some are saying that it may outshine HTML5, you have to understand that no tool is right for every job. It will be an option for web developers to support Silverlight but different jobs will require HTML and Flash.

HTML5 also has limitations. It cannot stream video according to the user's bandwidth. This means that subscription sites like Netflix will have issues with HTML5. Silverlight also has weaknesses. It is designed on Expression Blend and Expression Design which many designers don't use.

Silverlight is also browser-based and cannot be used on applications. It also will not support H.264 video codec. Of course when you talk about the limitations, you have to understand that Microsoft will be making improvements in order to keep its product up to speed with the its high profile competitors.

While HTML5 and Silverlight are exciting technologies, it's hard to say that they will replace Flash. HTML5 and Silverlight have to be promoted and will have to persuade the majority of the population that uses Flash. This will be a tough uphill battle and may be a losing one. Both developers and users are used to Flash and use it on everything from their computers to mobile devices like Android-powered smartphones and tablets.

It may seem like this is a battle between Silverlight, Flash, and HTML5, but Silverlight and HTML5 may actually be alternate ways to deliver the same result for users. Developers looking for custom software development may find many unique uses for the new technologies but it's really hard to say that either one will replace Flash altogether. In the end, the real benefit will be the users. As these technologies continue to compete with one another, the quality of the products delivered via these mediums will increase, providing a superior user experience.
